Many folks still have yet to blog
Wednesday, November 30, 2005
Today was a lot of work and tomorrow even more so. Haven't had much time to do any of my side work ... getting poorer and poorer lol ..

Today did mostly work into getting the mailing out. I noticed some names were repeated and I spilled Iyana's soda, further complicating the task. Some of the alumni didnt get a return evelope and I just felt that we/I inadequately orhestrated this mailing to maximize its potential.

Nonetheless, I'll take the mail to Teachers College in the morning, get Shem, Aisha and I ready to present at Bronx science and then return to HL to meet with Seana about next steps, and then work on getting the newbies to come in and to get classes for them scheduled and for them to take action on their stories.

David, of City as and Rohan of Pulse HS have been the most promising newbies, but hopefully more will emerge.

I FINALLY GOT ON THIS DAMN THING
Monday, November 28, 2005
Well after a lot of confusion and whining I finally managed to join this blog (with the help of the lovely Mera Beckford). Anyways I am currently at HarlemLive trying to send out a mass email about this upcoming staff meeting and working on my assignment Kevin just gave me about "must haves" and movie previews. I recently found out that MNN is shut down temporarily. That sucks. But HarlemLIVE Speaks will continue to taping later on in the month which is also a good thing. Mera, Kevin, and myself had a discussion about the upcoming fashion show and I am optimistic about it all. I hope and I am sure that with the help of all of HL staff it will be a great success. I hope this is 150 words because I am tired of typing and I got to go home and do some homework. Laters.

Gearing up...
Sunday, November 27, 2005

School's officially back in session and everything has settled down. Now that HL's recruitment is in full swing it's time to get everyone used to how things work. Seems like it's going to be a bit of a task but with a whole year as Managing Editor under my belt it's been going alot smoother than last year.

A few things...
This blog is one of the many new things that started this past summer. We also had podcasting and a new page added to the website. (Shout out to our new Health Editor TraceyA. Casseus). In time the blog will become a function of our website as well.

I'm around to help, make use of me. That doesn't mean I'm your secretary or personal organizer!

We're all here to have fun, but PRODUCTIVITY is PRIORITY. ( Richard's nodding as he reads this.)

Lastly, take advantage of HarlemLIVE. There's alot to experience.

Still NO Blogs!!! Suspensions come next
I came into today. Only Chris F and Van were in. Tamara came in for a few at one point and later Mera and kevin.

When I came in, the place was a bit messy. I started by emptying the garbage and lining the waste baskets. I don't get why folks put food laden bags and cups and what not into the waste baskets when there's no plastic lining. No one washes the waste baskets so the crap just builds up until the waste baskets become nasty. I wish folks would take the effort to line a waste basket that has no lining before just tossing their crap inside. (sigh)

I asked Chris to clean off counter tops. There was an old soda cup on the kitchen table w/ lots of food scraps and there was lots of caca on the work station tables. We straightened out the chairs and the conference table which somehow always gets pushed way into the corner so there's really not enough room to really get around it.

After cleaning up, the place felt much better.

For the week, I'll be concentrating on the mailings getting out as we'll be asking folks for $$$ with the outgoing newsletter. We're a bit short for rent and paying Seana and our various bills but somehow we'll pull through. Scheme clothing store is out of business. We really need to find legal help if the landlord is going to start harassing us. It seems as if they're trying to empty out the building. I'll ask Seana what she suggests we do re: legal help and / or contacting the owners.

WELL we need to really help the newbies schooled in how to do things, getting them the skills they need to succeed.

NO BLOGS, NO ENTRY to HL.. Everyone start posting please.

Where are all the blogs
Thursday, November 17, 2005
Well, Starting Monday, all the regular staffers must begin posting blogs. Mera, please draw up a schedule. EDITORS.. even if it's TWO LINES, post SOMETHING!!!!!

Working on finishing newsletter right now and then have to figure out what kind of solicitation letter we want to go out with it and then get it in the mail by MOnday.

We had the first batch of students come through Urban Assembly for Media Studies. They'll send another batch in the coming days. It's important that the editors take time to nurture and support the newbies. Also the Columbia J School students should be coming in Friday or Monday as I sent them an invite to do so.

Cynthia came by the office today. She's borrowing the larget white iBook for a few days while she's in the city. She's going through a very trying time right now. She's here on the low so she has to conserve who and when she see's anyone. She's trying to keep things pretty quiet.

OK more later. EDITORS..START POSTING.

Back to Blogging
Wednesday, November 09, 2005
Well everyone, HL has taken a long time to get back to a "flow" from the summer madness, but I think things are getting back to how they should be. We had several new recruits in today from our recent visit to the schools Thurgood Marshall and Urban Academy of Media. That school in particular should be promissing in that they are one the Gates (as in Bill Gates) funded schools. Since their focus is media, perhaps we can work out some kind of funding oportunities through participation with them. When Justin and I went there Monday, we also met a couple teachers that might come through and work with us as well.

Everyone should be checking the calendar that Mera set up. It's at www.my.calendars.com/harlemlive. Everyone should know the user name and password. Please check it daily, even multiple times each day as we're costantly updating it with stories, meetings, visitors etc.

Additionally, there should be a story sheet for each and every story, be it poem, article, man on the street, video, whatever so anyone at anytime can see what we're currently working on or know what's ready to be posted.

We're very behind in putting up much content, including the Health page, the Clickable Map, the slideshows, we need to get our groove back!!!

To that end, we have some promising developments including working with the columbia journalism school students, we got some money to hire a grantwriter, and we are on our way to establishing more relationships with different schools.

Well this isn't such a great post but it's a start. Iyana and Keisean still have yet to put theirs up
