We all spoke about how our presentation went on the Friday and where we should improve. I know we all have places that we need to pick up on and I know my place in the situation that needs work. I spoke about my mistake that I took part in and I know where I need to straiten up at and we all have our own preparation scheme for next Friday's presentation. We have weak people inside of HL Flow that we need to address and others that does work and doesn't get accounted for. In the process of our discussion, we spoke about what we will be covering for next week so we could be on top of our game and wont be disappointed at our work performance. From today until Friday, we will be working our tails off to prove to everyone that HL Flow has flow. We will show you all how the Flow get down.

Today to me was a good day. Stephanie, Johary, and I went to Gay Men of African Descent Organization. It went pretty well and just like yesterday interview, it through breezy. Also today I explained to my team what we were presenting on Friday. Everyone seemed cool with it and I hope that we win this week. Tomorrow I am going out with Johary and Francisca to my old school to interview my principal. I believe that this will go well just as the others. The other teams need to realize that HL Flow is about to step up. They been sleeping on us, but we got something in store for them. So Until Next Time......

On Enter Flash News: 003 HarlemLIVE

This week at Harlem live was one of the busiest. The kitchen was a creative war zone. There were a multitude of entrées, hors d'œuvre and, deserts. Gisely, the executive director is one of the culinary soldiers; She was chopping, washing, and cooking. We all know that every great soldier has a superb chef and he goes the name Kareem. I hope one day I could at least boil water as good as he can. Rosa and others helped clean the kitchen. I think she should get a 7,548 points and a spa coupon. Just when we were all ready to dig in the mouth watering, scrumptious food it was taken away. The good news is I did cook and the kids said it was okay. If your wondering were all the real food went. It was taken to the annual alumni association kick off. The event had great people who all support what Harlem live is giving to inner city youth. Rich the founder, the back bone and brains of Harlem Live is making shore that the program continues. The Kick off had a happy ending and later that night everyone back at Harlem live got to taste the satisfying foods. Kareem cooked too much food which was just enough for all of us who were anticipating his return.

On Thursday I had a class with Shem. I learned how to go to the new website and how to use the "Text Edit" program. It's cool that I'm an administer of the site. I get to post new and way old stories like from 2005. @ first with was with myself because everyone left for lunch or was out on a story. So I had a head start on the class until I had to go on and story with Rosa, Anthony, and Tamarra to speak with the president of the Jazz mobile. So when I came back I had to wait like a half - hour for the class to start. Now the class is ready and all of a sudden I felt sick and threw up.........

On Enter Flash News: 002 HarlemLIVE

Another day at Harlem live which is always filled with creativity,learning, and excitement.The kids work in teams to create compelling stories. The Programs main focus is Journalism. Each team produces a plethora of News Stories, poems, essays, video documentaries ,and other media. The most captivating thing about Harlem live is that the content produced by the teams are 100% word for word, image for image there own. The kids go out with there groups, find a story video tape it, write about it and edit it. As you may know from my previous video I teach Adobe Flash, but I'm not the only teach in town. The young journalists build skills that will make then serious contenders in the job world. This is Aliyah, shes been with Harlem Live for some time now and it's nice to work with the great people that come from this program. Right now shes adding points to teams and to individuals and I thought that Coding was hard. This is Michael and Nana doing team chores, I know that its not the most exciting thing you've ever seen, but it teaches them responsibility. Harlem Live is all about Journalism at quick glance, but there is way more than meets the eye. The program is character construction with a good story.

First Day ( Wednesday July 2nd)

First Day

So today is my first day and I'm kind of disappointed that I wasn't here yesterday. I have that kind of out of place feeling right now but I'm sure it'll go away. I wish I got here earlier so i could have gone on the scavenger hunt which would have totally been fun. I was really nervous at first when Richard told me that I might not get accepted since it was full. I came here thinking it was a done deal, that I was in but that shows that nothing is guaranteed.

I feel like what I'm writing sounds awkward. I guess it's because this is my first blog.

So Giselly seems really nice and so does Chuck. I'm not sure about Richard yet. He seems to be testing me I think. I don't know why...I guess he's concerned about going over the limit for the number of people here. Emily seems sweet, quiet but sweet. I think I'm going to like it here. I'm going to get more experience in journalism, meet new people, and have fun. HL seems like a fun place. As I'm writing this, all the people from the scavenger hunt are returning. I really do wish I went on the hunt but I'll get to go tomorrow.

So far, I've seen two people I know; Sade and Dushawn. I went to junior high with Dushawn and I go to school with Sade. I'm not particularly close to either one of them but it's nice to know someone.

I don't feel like I have much else to say and everything I've written so far is a bit boring. I guess as time goes on, I'll get the hang of it.

July 1St 2008, my first day at Harlem Live

The first day for me was really not what I would have expected. I came to Harlem thinking I was going to a large skyscraper, to be surrounded by businessmen. Instead I found myself going down the stairs to the basement of a facility. The first thing going through my mind was "I hope I don't get murdered". Then, as I walked down the steel staircase, and down the enclosed stone corridor that seemed like an escape passage,I saw the light. Literally I saw the light of the sun since the corridor led me to a backyard.

As the old saying goes, " Don't judge a book by its cover", it goes perfectly with my first impression. I didn't think much could come from such a creepy place, when in reality there was a warm embrace awaiting me. I was attacked by normalcy which in turn made me loosen up. I was prepared to be interrogated and dismissed by men in suits. I was astonished when I saw people in casual clothing (and not suits), and I indeed felt overdressed.

The day itself was filled with fun and games which were designed to get us all to know one another. This was a shock seeing not what I expected. I also was lucky enough to meet some new people and make friends that were just like me in some ways. I like surprises and the surprises that I encountered on my first day at Harlem live have motivated me to be myself and feel welcomed in a home like facility. I can't wait to see what in store next.

A bird at Harlem Live

Yesterday was one of the most weirdest day in Harlem Live. It all started when Jose, Brad, Dushawn, and I where building a tent in the backyard.Then when Richard came out to see how were doing he spotted a baby bird that could barley fly. So when he came to tell us Jose went to catch it so a cat wouldn't eat it. Then Jose gave the bird to brad to hold while he finds a box to put it in and to stab holes in the box. Meanwhile as Jose was doing that Brad "accidentally" let it loose in the office twice and once in the main room where apparently Larado was. When Larado saw it try to fly in front of him, he started to scream and run all over the place. All of us started to laugh til our stomachs hurt.By that time Jose was finished with the box. We put the bird in a high place so it fall.The next morning Richard noticed that we left the bird on the ledge so he let the bird go in a high place so the cat woudn't eat it. That was the last time we all saw that bird.

Having spent my entire life in Rural Georgia, spending my summer in New York City has been nothing short of overwhelming. For the past 6 weeks, I've been doing what I originally came to do--my part time internship for college credit at the University of Georgia. In my attempt to find extra work to pass the time in Manhattan, I came across a volunteer opportunity to help out journalism students here at HarlemLive, and decided to get involved.

So far, I've only been a part of HarlemLive for less than four hours, but I already feel like my experience in New York has reached a high point. The atmostphere at HarlemLive is a perfect combination of fun and dedication, which is what journalism is all about. I've been a writer for my high school newsmagazine and my college newspaper (rated top 5 in the state), and neither of those can compare to what I've been exposed to in just those four hours.

My journalism School over at UGA could learn something from this place. I'll definitnely have to pull up the website and show them when I go back home.

I Felt Like a Teacher Today

Hi everybody, my day was good but the weather kind of made me drowsy. Today when I came to HL there were two new members and Dyeemah, Laredo, and I played teacher. We taught them how to do a POS (Person on the Street), and it was fun. Then Dyeemah and I took them out to look for story ideas and to do a practice POS. Their names are Ryan and Zeeky, and they both did good for their first try. They did better then me on my first try, they were so comfortable doing it. It was fun playing teacher today, I would like to do it more often. But Shem's class is about to start so I'll speak to you guys later.

Drug Peace March!

On Saturday May 3rd, Laredo and I ventured down to Tompkins Square Park to attend a gathering supporting the legalization of marijuana. I was really nervous about asking people about their opinions on why they believed marijuana should be legalized. Everyone was smoking weed (obvious, I guess) and some people looked really drugged out. But the first person we interviewed, a man selling books teaching you how to roll a joint, was really open and nice to us. Everyone had really interesting points, and I feel as if my outlook on marijuana has changed. There was one man who walked up to Laredo and I to invite us to a play about cocaine. He was really cool, and realized that we were both nervous about approaching the really drugged out looking people, so he encouraged us.

All in all I am happy that we went and pushed ourselves.

Day at CBS!!!

Today was so much fun because we went to CBS studios when they were doing the news. It was so much fun because we got to go into the control room and we also got to see the journalist give the news. It was also fun because I got to meet the journalists and actually talk to them and ask questions. I was also impressed with the control room because it has so many screens and so many buttons that those men need to deal with. I was amazed how they did it so well without making any mistakes.

NY Times

Well today I visited the NY Times head quarters and we got a really good tour of the whole building. The tour guide was very good with giving answers to our questions and explaining everything about the building and he also gave us some history about the times which I found to be very productive because before this tour I didn't know about the times, so with his own personal working there type of thing it gave us more of what they do, not just write stories, but work as a team. The picture I added to my blog is the type that they used in the old days to get the work in the paper.

In A Days Work

Hey HL bloggers checking in again I hope all of you are doing well and your health is on point. Today was an exciting day Stephanie, Dyeemah and I had gone out on a POS; I have always been fascinated with seeing people at HL in their environment or field. I was proud of how professional they were as a crew as we worked together. They are so young and have so much promise, ha ha listen to me talking like I am grown. I have also seen myself grow as a video grapher, and that's the whole point of being in Harlem Live to grow and improve your craft. The residents that were interviewed gave positive feed back; some even gave different points of view on the subject we asked them about. By the way we asked them their thoughts on having the pope come to AMERICA. Remember spring break is coming by so don't get lazy make sure to in all your assignments for school.

I feel bad that I didn't get the appropriate spelling of one the social workers. I want to write an article on Hip and Hop next. A hot spot at the moment is the Dominican Republics very own Punta Cana resort beach. Next on the list is Mexico's Cancun. Keep in mind that every thing you do reflects who you are. Make sure you do nothing that you’ll be ashamed of later on, but always have fun. If staying in New York for your spring break makes sure you get lots of sleep at home. Harlem Men

On Thursday, Nyeisha, Kennequa, Laredo, and I went to an event for a program called Harlem Men at Harlem Children Zone. I didn't know what to expect so I couldn't wait for the event to begin. They served finger foods, juice and water. As I looked around, I noticed that every person seemed to be positive and I didn't feel any negative vibes at all. I really liked the event and felt that it was really inspiring. The organization wants to give young men the chance to be something later on in life. Also I noticed kids in the gym exercising and being very productive. That was separate from the event and I found that to be great because it was late but Thursday's weather was nice. So to see students doing that it showed me that these kids were already on the right path.

Starting to get the hang of HL

Last week Thursday I went to this summit which Nyiesha was writing a story on. It was about people coming together to help fix up their neighborhood and their special guest was Dominic Carter. It was very interesting and it was nice to see people wanting to help revive and renew their neighborhood and helping their neighbors. It makes me so proud to be an African-American. Then Friday I went to the state building for a conference that was given by the senator Bill Perkins about getting rid of the rats in the neighborhood. That day I was the video person, it was kind of fun. I thought I would be bad at it but I did alright for the first time. Now today I am going to finish writing my story on “LIFEbeat”, hopefully it comes out good especially when it’s my first story. Later everybody, I hope you all enjoy the rest of this long week.

Today I had to post 2 stories and edit some stories on the new website. It was intricate but after Andrea showed me some techniques for posting and editing it got easier. I posted Arts and Culture stories. I thought they were interesting because they talked about sports. I found it was easy to understand from a young person perspective because I related to what the author wrote about.

Starting to Blend in.

I been in HarlemLive for a month and a half now and I'm starting to get use of things. It was hard at first because I wasn't use to doing anything after school unless it was sleeping and chilling with my friends. I am so happy I have gotten the chance to be here it knocked the laziness out of me. I got a chance to try something I always wanted to do which is being a journalist. It helps me get an idea of what I want to take on as a career in life. I went on a POS once and it was kind of fun I was nervous though but I got the hang of things after a while. It was funny and put thought to my mind by hearing different people responses. I went to interview someone at an organization called Life beat a little while ago and I’m about to start writing my story on it now. That was cool and I learned a lot by doing that. It's like I'm breaking out my shell a little because I'm so use to being by myself, luckily everybody here is friendly and cool. They make me feel more comfortable. Also, everyone at the program is starting to eat healthy which has started my diet and exercising. I can’t wait to I really get on board and start blending in with the HarlemLive crew.

Hey guys, what's up? I haven't painted in so long and on Saturday we were painting HL's walls. It was fun because we were all together and the weather couldn't have been better. Little by little we'll be making this place prettier. My weekend was great I had a couple of surprises that were very unexpected, and that made me a happier person. My birthday is on Wednesday I'm so excited because I will be spending time with my friends and the important people in my life. Plus I'm getting my phone back oh my god I can't wait no more lol. It's like a part of me was missing! But soon the wait will be over. Stephanie, Angelica, Nana and me all went story hunting and we found a couple of interesting stories that we will be working on. Angelica and I had to interview two of our teachers and a couple of students from our school for a video for the Columbia University Teachers College. During my interview, I kept messing up because one of my teachers kept making me laugh. It was sort of hard to be serious with him even though normally he is a serious teacher. During my second interview it was natural for me because this was my all time favorite teacher. After my interviews were done it was Angelica's turn. During one of her interviews some lady walked right into the shot even though we told her not to. I don’t understand why people have to be rude even if you are nice to them.

Hey HL bloggers, It's me Divi again! I brought good news to the village. We have seen Jay-z and Beyonce's secret relationship since 2000. Well, maybe not seen it as much, but their together and have strategically stayed out of the lime light as a couple. Now it's been alleged that they have filed for a marriage license. I personally think they make a great power couple; they have worked hard for their success. It's always nice to have someone to share that love with. I hope they do get married and give the public a wedding to talk about. HarlemLive on Wednesday April 2, 2008 was an enlightening day I was taught vital steps needed on a video program. I love video since I have been doing it and I have a whole new perspective and respect for editors.

Wow what a day at HL

Today, I got into so much done today I couldn't believe myself. I got a chance to upload about 6 more stories and the most exciting part of my day was when I found out how to upload a video to the website. Wow that was a major leap in my life. Also, I showed a fellow student how to use an application that she didn't know before and I'm glad. I got a chance to actually show what I'm learning at HarlemLive because it shows that I'm learning some new skills .I can also enhance my own skills about computer design and learn how to use the software. Lifebeat

I had interviewed somebody that works at Life beat today; it's a nonprofit organization that brings awareness about HIV and Aids through the music industry. It was a nice short interview, I learned a lot about their program. Their located between 44Th and 45Th and 9Th avenue building 630. They give concerts for people with HIV and full blown AIDS. They have tours targeting people ages 13 to 24, giving them condoms and informing them about HIV and AIDS. Also, informing them how to prevent themselves from getting the infection. Lifebeat also have other programs; check out the website Lifebeat.org, as young adults especially we need to learn about this infection. HIV and AIDS is a very serious issue so don't be scared be aware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How Can I Support you?

I don't think one American can honestly and confidently say what is our true reason for beginning the war in Iraq? For all what has been told, we could be fighting for the removal of weapons of mass destruction, oil, removal of Saddam Hussein from power, etc. But could any of these reasons justify the killing of our people, the killing of human life in general. In a democratic republic we have the ability to voice our opinions and make a difference for what the majority may think is better. But as clear as many of Americans have opinionated about their feelings towards the war, we continue to fight and people continue to die.

In my opinion, I do not believe it is necessary for us to be in war. I do not think there is no possible and justified reason for the right of people to kill people. I believe though as a world power we should take an active role in the global community but I do not believe we should barge our way into another country a boss people around.

Since the beginning of our history, our early presidents promoted the idea of neutrality but as the years went on we have lost our foundation of what made our country unique and true and came up with a mutant US. Our freedom is restricted, our economy is regulated despite laissez faire, we choose sides amongst countries, etc. Though presently Americans do benefit from our new policies, does it really protect us? Protesters are arrested for the out spoken opinions but should that stop us from voicing our opinion.

In Iraq, soldiers are not the only ones dying. Insurgents, men, women, children, the spirit and the history of Iraq are also dying. A life could not be measured by a number or a percentage. Yet we refer to these people as just a number or like a bug and it doesn't matter that they died. But as soon as a soldier died we hold up our hands and scream for their lives. We honor them with the same bullets that have killed them. We fight and fight to remember their lives and make sure they are not forgotten. But who will cry and fight for those stricken by war? They didn't ask for war, we inflicted it.

Why not give peace a chance? Lives are not lost by peace. War kills. Peace saves.

Journalism Class

Today our first class was taught by Katie, and she works as a copy editor at the New York Times. Today we learned about the basics of Journalism and what different type of News stories there are which are:
Breaking News stories: Current events
Investigated stories: Take a lot of time, and you have to do a lot of research about a certain topic.
Feature Stories:
Consumer News stories: Stories about what you buy and how it affects your life

Also when you are going to do an interview you should make sure to make some research about who you are interviewing before the day of your interview so you could be prepared and know to ask questions that are on a harder level scale. Make sure to answer the 5 W's too.

I can apply what I learned in my future stories. It would help me be more prepared for writing and interviewing people.

For the future class I think we should make an activity that will get us more involved with the class. Like for example: pick a topic and each person has to write a sentence about what they know and try to make sense of it with the collaboration of everybody.

She gave us this advise too “Good writing comes from good reporting."

Nick News.

Hey, it took me a while to post this, but I've been so tired lately.

On Thursday, Nana, Nyeisha, Sely, Emily, and I went to Nick News. Nana, Nyeisha, and I were interviewed about the topics that have been the most talked about lately: the Iraq War, the economy, health care, terrorism, the environment, and immigration.

There was a van that picked us up from HL and drove us down to Lucky Duck Productions. In the van, we talked about what we were most comfortable talking about on camera. When we got there, everyone was super nice, and we got sodas (to eat with our pizza,) from a really cool, vintage soda machine.

Nyeisha was the first to go. The woman who interviewed her said she did a great job, and said that I was up next. I was really nervous at first, but I knew I would be happy I did it after it was done. They ran a microphone through my shirt, and put powder on my face (real star treatment : ) JKJK) And then the interviewer started asking me questions. I talked about the war in Iraq, terrorism, and immigration. I think we all did pretty well, so hopefully they don't edit us out :)

The Nick News that we did is coming on April 13th, I'm not sure what time, but check it out!

It was such a good experience, and opportunity to be able to talk about my opinions, and hopefully make a difference. Hopefully, this will just be the beginning of opportunities like this for HL. I am so grateful to have been chosen, good thing I made the age limit. Usually, I don't like speaking in public, or being on camera, but I think I'm getting a lot better at it.

P.S. I'm sorry I couldn't come to the staff meeting.

My Experience

Well today's experience was very different from my first experience going out to approach a POS (person on the street). My first time when I went to approach a POS I was kind of nervous. Many people turned us down, which made me a bit frustrated because it was very cold outside. But we were able to get a few people that had no problem with us interviewing them and video taping them. The people that we interviewed had so much interesting things to say about the issue with ex-governor Spitzer and the scandal. This gives me practice to see how I should approach an interview with a POS and how to deal with rejection and people that are immature. As for my second experience, I actually did something. We went to a rally for charter schools. The reporters didn't get much about what was going on, but I did get some pictures. At the end of this post I will put two pictures up showing what I got. So as for me being here at HarlemLive, I really like it. I don't feel uncomfortable and nobody makes me feel that way either. Well I'm done for now. Pristine signing out!

A Fun Day at HL

Today was a very good day because i was not tired, and that only happens once in a blue moon. Plus today was the last day of school Thank God!!!. At HL we had are photography class like every Thursday with Shem and we learned how to use some of the tools in Photoshop. It's amazing all the things you can do in Photoshop. You could make extreme makeovers :) pretty cool i think!.

After our class some of the girls and i went to cover a last minute story in 120th and Lenox Ave. It was about a rally for Charter Schools. In case you did not know Charter Schools are smaller schools outside the Border of Education. They get some money from the state and others funds from private organizations. These schools are brand new, and start with Kindergarten and first grade and then start adding more grades. Their main goal is to install the idea of going to college to younger children since they are about 4 to 5 years old. It's a good thing because the next generations would be more prepared and better educated.

Fur has been considered royal wear since pre-historic times . Every one from Queen Elizabeth the first to princess Diana have worn fur. Somewhere in the process of the fur attire era it came over to N,YC. I have to be honest going uptown from 42th fur isn't even spoken of. So why is it that people wear fur in the first place? . Is it to feel like a rich madmoselle or an old hollywood star;Wearing fur is something I will never understand .No I am not the type to take away a persons individuality . If you like it feel free to wear it just know that it looks like you killed your pet an a wearing it on your back.

OK! After a long dormancy, HL is about to wake from its slumber. After a year of being mentored, Associate Director, Melvin Johnson and the Director of Operations, Gisely Colon-Lopez, are ready to rev the program up to a more fevered pitch. Within the next week or so, we'll be launching the new interface. We're moving our site to a new server which gives us more ways to manipulate the content. We've already established more classes, many new students, new roles. It's time. Stay tuned.

Happy New Year all!!! Here at HarlemLIVE we are looking forward to another successful fun-filled year.

The students at HarlemLIVE have been out and about finalizing their stories. Our students have expressed a strong interest about the Presidential Campaign and are working hard on stories. They are currently visiting all the NYC Presidential Headquarters and finding out how they are trying to track the youth vote, and how they are getting the youth involved. So far they have been able to visit the Barack Obama headquarters downtown and the Hilary Clinton headquarters in midtown.

Our student pool has begun to increase over the past two weeks. We have had a healthy flow of students everyday (Rich has been smiling all week long!!) We have also accomplished a healthy intake of adult volunteers as well. We have been able to establish a weekly class schedule and the students are once again getting the support they lost during our move.

HarlemLIVE College Prep Kick Off

HarlemLIVE kicked off its annual College Advisor Program on Friday October 5th! It was a great success and we had some amazing adult volunteers to pair up with our students. We also want to give a shout out to our Alumni who showed up for our Alumni panel, we appreciate it very much.

We will also be visiting Syracuse University, and Cornell University on October 20th.

In addition to kicking off our "New Program 07/08" we had our first "Menteer" Meeting today Tuesday October 9th, which was also a great success! We have new and veteran menteers (formally known as adult volunteers) who are going to be involved on a more frequent basis. Stay tuned for the Calendar of upcoming classes!

Yesterday Ravi, Ena and I (Shelise) attended the Barack Obama Rally in Washington Square Park and I am now both a Barck and Hilary fan.I loved the rally and thought it was one of the best events I went to since being a part of HarlemLIVE.But I must admit that I am waiting for the Hilary rally so I can make a finally decision since I will be able to voye next year (YAY!!)nyway I finished editing the video which is 10 minutes long and will hopefully be posted on the site Monday afternoon along with Ravi's slide show of the pics he took.Look forward to more updates on the blog and website.October is the new beginning and HarlemLIVE is going nowhere!!!

HarlemLive has started off the new year with renewed vigor since it has brought on alumnus Melvin Johnson and soon to be joined by alumna Gisely Colon to work along with Kamal Muhammad who is taking classes this semester. They are joined by a growing number of alums that are gravitating back to the program to give back. Aisha Al-Muslim and Christopher Frierson have been some of the most consistant alums to keep the program growing.

New adult advisor, Paul Moreland has been helping with the other video advisors and already the site has been getting updated regularly with a lot of new video content. Check it out.

HarlemLIVE back at Barnes and Noble

Monday through Thursday of this week, HarlemLIVE is wrapping books at the East 86th Street Barnes and Noble bookstore. Barnes and Noble has non profits come in to wrap books where they can solicit tips for the free book wrapping service.

HarlemLIVE current students and alums and adult volunteers all particiapte to raise funds to help the program. It sounds like it would be boring as all get out but it's actually kind of fun getting out of the office and talking about our program with the public.

Thanks to all students and adults for helping us out! If you'd like to come see us or help out, we're there from 5PM 'til 11PM through Thursday (Dec 7th).

WOw what a day for Team Joc! I went to HL EARLYYYYYYYYY today to help clean up the kitchen for todays challenge. Team Joc for the challenge had to clean the kitchen! I think Team Joc reallt worked hard to clean that kitchen. And when I say that kitchen was dirty, it was DIRTY! With the $50 we got from the challenge, we spent $40, but it was all worth it! We got a lot of new stuff for the kitchen such as new sponges, dish rages, paper towel ring, a bathroom set, and some candy for people in HL to snack on! I hope we win that challenge. Looking back on this summer and thinking about Team Joc I think about our ups and downs and how that reflected our presentation on Tuesday. Rich will not tell us the winner, but thats ok but we are all anxious to know who the winner is! But i hope Joc does win beacuse we have had so many lows that a win would make the summer not so bad after all. But if we dont win I'll still be happy because in these past 2 weeks Joc has put in alot of work. I jus hope our presentation reflects that. Tomorrow we will see tho. Good luck to my team! And Tanisha....we will not forget about you. You are like a sister to me now. I wish her all the best of luck in college!

We just finished doing our presentations at Columbia University. It was my first time going to the University, so it was pretty nice. While walking through the hallways I felt like I were a college student. Anyway, enough about that....now the presentaion was so scary. I was so nervous to even through the double doors. My team weren't as prepared as we could of been but it turned out o.k. I actually enjoyed the presentations. I honestly thought the judges were going to uptight but they were very cool. I enjoyed the whole college setting. It gave me insight on what college life and setting would be...LOOK OUT COLLEGE LIFE , JAQUANA IS OONNN HER WAY!!!!!

Today Was A Lesson Learned (jonny?)

I had an argument with one of my teammates and once again I embarrased myself inorder for people to hear what I have to say.Though I went through embarrasment I don't regret a thing I said and kinda wished Kamal would have never grabbed me because I had more to tell.One thing im concerned about is having the staff feel that they can't talk to me without blowing up.So I hope everyone can understand that they can come to me whenever they want and once I recieve respect, I will definitly give double in return.But when I feel that respect is not given to me there's no way i'll give it back.I learned from Chris F. that I should never hold in my anger because sooner or later i'll let it all out at once.I plan to learn from this day and hope that i'll never have to act like that.The people here are like my family and i've never felt the love I get from here anywhere else.Not even from my own flesh and blood.I spend all the time I have here.This is now my home and no one is going to take that away from me.Not even myself!

Today is MONDAY!!!!! And today Team Joc did our taping at MNN. The taping went very well. Ranesha and Teaisha were anchors for the show. They were able to do two run throughs of the show which was really good. This way when the video is edited there will be alot of video to edit from. The anchors for our show did really too! The rest of my team was able to view the show from the control room! Mw personaly I thought I was pretty intrestingto see the control room and the different things used to run a show. In a way it was insightful due to seeing how things work. The control room had a vibe that was serious, but humor was still evident. We werre glad to finish the show, and afterwards we went to BET. There we were able to schedule another story. I also saw Rick Ross who we wanted to take a picture of to get more points. And once again our folder went missing which sucks and is starting to get a little boring. Presentation is tomorrow and I hope it goes better than next week. ut like I said I will keep faith in my team. Team J0c!!

Wat It Do Babyy Wat It Do! I took a little break off the bloggin thing but that's only because I was a little busy or whatever. Just gettin used to the new york lifestyle once again. I lost it for a little minute in d.c. but my family gettin me back on track, and im back on track up here. this is raw and unedited so, i dont really care about the capitols or the apostrophe's we just goin raw right now so....im chillin u know, i came back to a lot of new things, new people comin thru to the set a harlemlive, and thats what it do cuz we need more people. especially those thats close to the site cuz im realizin that alot of the people thats here now, producin all of this great work as a unit aint even gonna be here durin the school year. some of us gotta put in all that good work for our teachers and improve our chances of gettin into a better situation in college and hopefully in life too. so whoever comin it gotta hold it down, at least until next summer....
as for the competition, its getting hotter and hotter the more we continue. when i first came back we were down in the competition to second place, and to me, second aint a place. that just mean u aint win babyy, and i wasnt feelin that. but now, and it wasn't cuz of me at all, we back into the lead, and thats only for a little bit of time. i can feel it. hopefully im wrong, but team anonymous is on our asses. they at least a goot 1000 points away. thats too close, we gotta increase that spread to a good 4000 or somethin. that too close for comfort. i also came back to find out that team joc had lost a good amount of their stories, and i was real sorry to hear about somethin like that. thats messed up. now they down in the cellar. but the race is still on, and i know that they still got some good pieces on that team so we can never count them out of the comp. good journalists, and video people, hmmmm, we cant let up babyy, if anything we gotta push harder. but for now i gotta sign out, get back to hardly workin, and maybe eat somethin. gotta continue my get fat diet babyy. but im out.....

Busy Week Coming Up:
On Monday, at 10AM the Harlem Arts Alliance monthly meeting is held. This is a great networking oportunity for any "easy to schedule" stories. At least 50 or so organizations and artists are represented (whom go to various PLACES of WORSHIP, have various BUSINESSES, Non Profit Organizations, etc ....

During the week, each team will be taping their 1/2 Hour TV shows. Joc will tape Monday. We were going to give Joc more time for Presentation Monday but realized we'd have to get the same judges to return on the other day. So Joc, after your hectic Monday is done you can spend the rest of the week finishing the mandatory topics to get those bonus points. Another option would be to postpone Monday's presentation for all teams to Tuesday.

The other two teams tape their shows on Friday and Saturday.

Also next week is the 500 Flier contest where teams will compete to see who can pass out the number of fliers fastest. Coupled with this competition will be the 'funniest video' competition, a HarlemLIVE tradition. Each team will be video taped by another team and edit the video to create the funniest video to be played at the ceremony. This video is due by Wednesday before the ceremony and is worth 2,500 pts.

Teams will also be preparing for their Grand Presentations next Tuesday, the 15th.

Next week, students will prepare for their presentations on Tuesday at Columbia, Complete their resume's on Wednesday (including HL roles/tasks/skills) turn in any college essays due from all rising seniors and submit any names of dignataries they've invited and expect to attend the ceremony at ABC STudios at 6:45 PM on August 17th. We must start promptly at 7:05 so don't be late!

Friday's Blog of the Day by Rhonesha

..... so that was yesterday...as far as today, I reallt feel like I got a lot done. Yes I know it is supposed to be a team effort but they had done their part already and it was up to me to make it all take form. So, on monday we have a show to tape and no one knew anything about what we were doing and what was going into it, the order the time, the clips NOTHING. so miraCULOUSLY, my friend from the NYU workshop came in and we went to work. first i assigned her a story to be due next monday. then i finished some last minute touches on my EBc housing story and sent it out to a couple of editors. Then me an tekisha looked at what we had to work with for the show, the criteria, etc. We put everything in order picked the clips and photos to go with it, timed every segment out to the LAST SECOND!! amazingly it came out perfectly after the first estimates. We broke it up into different sections and basically we organized the whole show. the only thing left to do is actually write it out which is the easiest part, so we broke it up between us and will be emailing each other back and forth with what we have. I am trying to get out the office right now to get some footage of the COLORS restaurant for a story i did and also some b-roll footage of chinatown.....it shouldnt take long but of course its taking long to get people to move. then kamall just wwalked up to me in the middle of me typing this because he wants me to introduce myself to someone who came in who is working on a website....kamall never knows the full story....but thats another thing,. well there are so many typos because i am trying to rush out of here but i will edit them later. ummmm ....people COMMENT ON MY POSTSSSSS. and Rich I am writing you a letter, joc is missing a lot of earned points--like points for creating the new creative section we established for the HL site called HarlemLIVe celebs. well im going to try and look for a tape now because there are supposedly no more, lol....i have to find mine, it's some where. wow all this and i havent slept for 2 days, literally....i was at bryant park at 4 in the morning to see kanye and pharrell in concert....so i am really about to crash......

I think the best thing to do is remember the horrible memories in your life. Don't talk about it but, remember it. Because it shows your a fighter. I really don't know why but it seems like the day is going on and some how Im not in it, kinda like Im alone on my own planet. At Harlem Live its very quiet and very creepy. There's not toomany people here today in the team and in general. Today I wanted to do my P.O.S. ( a person on the street) on Beyonce's "Deja Vu" video. My P.O.S is on the video and people thoughts about the video. Some people think that the video doen't make any since and it has no story or theme to it. Me personally I love the song its a very good song but the video in my own words isn't really good. I think the clothing inthe video is over dramatic and the choragrapohy is very bad

O MY...when is this heat weave going to end! This heat wave is really bad. I mean walking is really tiring now and most of all its putting a stop to going out on POS's. But ever since Monday our team has gotten motivated and other than our planned POS's we have been doing a lot better. Rhonesha is back and shes been hard at work n stories. Curtis finished a video!! The video is really hot and I liked it. Aleah got a GREAT interview comming! She booked it today and it should be nice! I left a message for one of my contacts and if I'm able to get that story, I will be passed happy. Overall the team has been working on presentation monday which IS going to be much better than this weeks. Everyone had a say on different ideas and things like that. For one thing hey expect us to tape a television show and also make a presentation for monday plus work on our stories for the website! Way too many things piled on top of one another. I am just focusing on one thing right now which is my big story on the ground breaking ceremony in brooklyn, I have so many connections in this its a rap.

Well, I honestly think that we can win but there are too many steps to go through to hand something in. I have so many things to hand it but the process is being delayed.

I have been working all morining but I have to do a whole lot more stuff. I am so hungry right now I have not stopped today to eat or anything.

I am going to say it for the last time, it is HOTT! outside. It is 100 degrees today. Did i tell you it was hot? O yea my bad Sorry. I almost did not make it to HarlemLIVE today. But i had to think about my team and not myself so i took the coolest way to HarlemLIVE and got here in about 8 minutes. I was only hot on about 2 blocks because they didnt have any shade or trees at all. They should make it a law to have some form of shade on every block once it hit 90 degrees. I'm serious. This is'nt a joke.
Then i had to go outside to pass out flyers. That was the funny part of my day. Well i had a couple of laughs. As i walked wit my friend we handed flyers to a couple of people but its was funny because i think they only took it to fan themselves. LOL Then on the way back to HarlemLIVE a boy was handing out flyers to a Talent Search so we told him that we'll trade. So we gave him ours and he gave us his. That was a pretty fair trade.
Overall, this day was iight besides the sorching heat. Well thats all i had to tell yall. I'll holla.

Today I took a class on Podcasting and GarageBand so I learned two really cool and beneficial skills. Tomorrow I'm taking a Keynote class and Chris said I get my first video class on Thursday. *Big Smiles* I'm still working on my career profile. We had a rough spot and everyone thought we were giving up but we are going to try and pull it together enough to make it work. We just got the topic for Monday’s presentation and were getting started on planning out how we are going to present our ideas. Today was presentation and it went pretty bad. Speaking for myself, I felt let down big time by many members on my team. It's weird to look at people speaking about a change, but has no work to show for it. I will admit to not fully participating in presentation today, but I didn't feel like a group today. I felt like people doing seperate things that just were not united. This week major change has to occur with people who are simply not doing there work. I think we should try to learn from today because I felt this was the lowest our team has ever hit. I will continue to do my part, but I really want to see others do the same. I also think people should be aware of how they speak to others because it creates a bad vibe when trying to get things done. Team Joc! I hope we can still do this tho!!!

Yoo hi you doing is your boy Jonathan holding it down and i want to say that i love spending time here and i love the atmosphere here. I wish my mother would understand that I love it here and enjoy leaving here late at night finishing some work. My mother threated me and stated that if i came late again that she wont allow me to go to Harlemlive anymore. I was mad that i heard that but i know where she is coming from. She cares about me like every other mother knows how to. Is that love what keeps me going through in life. A mother's love for a child could not be topped by any other love out there. But in reality i will never let here pull me out of this program. I love HL too much for this shit to happen. Also queens is very deep and to go home in that A train is very difficult to do. You see late at nights the A train runs local and u know i get to my house by 2 am and it break my moms heart seeing me come home sooo late. Anyways i dont want to talk about train related problems because then team joc will make fun of me. Yeah any ways i learned alot from those minisink (NYC mission society) classes, they taught me how to avoid the military recruiters and how to ba an activist. I would love to be activist because they fight for what they believe in and i love that. I would say i would follow in the footsteps of Malcom X and Che Guevarra. They inspire me to keep on going and never stop believing in what you believe in. Hopefully when i reach adulthood i already made a difference in the community or in people's lives. I will have to maintain and keep focus on what i know is right and to know what actions i must do to make things right. Right now my intentions is to bring the Henry people back. I have lost at least three people from the wall incident and they haven't returned. I am worried that they wot come back. But i wont lose hope because when things go wrong it hardly goes wrong twice. Also Rich is not giving up hope so pray to God, Jesus, Allah or who ever you pray to.

Today at HL there was a real calm enviornment in the air. There is usally a lot of work noise since there we're all in one big room, but today was pretty different. It might be due to the fact that most people were out on stories. But other than that I had to go out on the bike and ride with Curtis to 122nd and Madison to take pictures of a Hospital that one of my group members had done a story on. I had to also draw some images for some poems that a couple of my teammates did. What had also occured today is that we had a new member join Team JOC. We are recieving new members like whoa and it is still not helping our team in any kind of way. Our team has some strong members but we also have our weak spots. We badly need another video person because Curtis is attending some workshop s$#% this week and Tanisha does not have that much experience with videos. Also today, Tanisha lost her debit card and she was really frustrated, I tried to help her in finding the card but still didn't find it. But so far I was told that our team is leading and we are looking foward to working harder and to keep the lead so . . . 'til then.

Once again we have been JoCed. Team JoC was jerked in the presentation tonight. There is no way in hell tha Shuffle had a better presentation then us. All the did was show some video that didn't even give questions about Lil Kim. I mean come on , My slideshow presentation about the House of Soles was way better than that bull shit. Rich says we did a good job well it obviously wasn't good enough. Another thing people TROY is not on our team because of some little bull shit issue he has with Curtis "trying to prove he is better than him".But it' ok because I don't even care any more. I been stop caring, i didnt't want them to shut Harlem Live down as a SYEP site but honestly I feel like I'm back in highschool again. Kamal said I complain too much but I'm not gonna sit down and let shit happen if I have something to say. That's my personality and people are just gonna have to deal. YOOO IT'S JONNY!!!

This week was a test of our love and determination to be in Harlemlive. There was drama at HarlemLive for students getting pulled from HarlemLive. I was included in this drama and was affected most dearly. Clearly people do not know that this is my home. A proctor once said "A man can find happiness in his home but cannot find happiness elsewhere." HarlemLive is my home and no one can take that away from me. Today was a day of infamy for HarlemLive a day we will never forget. It was tense in the morning, no one knew what would happen next. But then, as I turned my face, I saw the Administrators of DYCD walking through the door. I was astonished they actually came to HarlemLive. I would have thought they had had such a busy life than to worry about a bunch of minority children accomplishing (to their point of view) nothing.

We are the youth, the strongest arsenal HarlemLive has. It was the youth who brought HarlemLive to where it is. It is like when Brad left, we thought we weren't going to make it. I thought when a problem affected Harlemlive who was here to fix it? But we came through. We did our thing and we are more closer to each other than ever. I can now say that HarlemLive will never fail to solve any problem someone throws at them.
We are stronger than ever and we will continue to become more powerful each year.

This media challenge is going to the Alliance hands down. We are more focussed than ever. We have lost powerful people on the way to greatness but have gained people too. The challenge is far from over but me writing this blog is keeping me from posting stories, editing on the site... back to work

I Got My Right Foot In, But They Pullin My Left Foot Out

Ahhhh, my team. How is the deck doin over there. I haven't been able to call any one yet because I haven't figured out what I'm going to do completely. If whether or not I'll stay or leave. Believe me, I want to stay, but there's a higher voice than mine, and if she says otherwise, I have no choice but to abide by her decision. This whole hole in the wall epidemic is like a cartoon. I don't understand how someone can take responsibility for something that they don't really know about. Rich, I hope you kiss and make up with these people real fast because I don't have the morale and strength to tell myself I'm going to another site. I can't tell myself I'm going to enjoy my time there as much as I have up there. And that's including the A-Train exploits. By taking us out, DYCD and other organizations for Summer Youth could be destroying a lot of the potential talent that HarlemLIVE possesses. They don't understand that this place gives teens the freedom to do what they want with their work that school doesn't. Maybe they aren't cool with that, but it is what it is. We videotape what we want, edit what we want, and our pens and keys can write and type whatever our minds can fathom.
As for Shuffle, keep ya heads up babyy. It aint over till it's over. Holla at me babyy...

As most of the SYEP students know, contractors have already informed them that they may return to HarlemLive. PHEW!!! Thank you! MORE later! .....

BUT we lost so much time! There are only three weeks until your GRAND presentations at TEACHERS COLLEGE! Each team still has to produce a half hour news broadcast (has every team reserved studio time at MNN)??

Notes: Rhonesha will be back on Thursday after her 10 Day Urban Journalism Workshop at NYU. Diamond will be out for the week while in Wash. DC to attend a youth leadership convention. Johnny will be gone for the first two weeks(!) in August for a business course, but back for the last week of the competition.

If the landlord did care, then things would have already been done. I'm sure if the people working at the Landlord Management Office had a problem similar to ours in their office, their wall would have been fixed easily. But because HarlemLIVE works with young teens, they automatially think we can wait. Well they've messed with the wrong group of kids. A newspaper can write a story in the paper but we can have numerous writers and post them not only on paper but on the WEB. The news channel can easily make a 30 second story on it but we can make a 30 minute story, post it on the web and play it for those who want to listen to our problem. There's nothing they can do to stop us. We are ten times stronger then the local newspaper and the best news channel. We are kids that's giving up our free time and doing something different with our lives and if they don't understand that, then we'll make them!

Repairs have been Made, place is set, Now we await word

HarlemLive has been temporarliy suspended as an SYEP site. However, as of this evening, all the conditions and repairs have been made. We will be faxing DYCD this notification tomorrow and hopefully we can begin again as an SYEP site. We WILL continue to operate, as we do during the non summer months and the teams will continue their efforts .

We were in the process of having our best summer ever at HL until this issue diverted our attention and halted our efforts. Yet, once again, the youth at HL pulled together to make things happen. You all did great!

The wall is fixed. The doorknob is replaced. The loose tiles are secure.

All classes , presentations and teams continue with the non SYEP students and any SYEP student that wishes to continue as a volunteer. But we're hoping this will be cleared up ASAP and would like to be reinstated into SYEP. We've done and are doing what has been asked of us.

I can just feel it that this week is going to be a good one.Yesterday I went out on a story in the Bronx at St. Anthony Catholic School. besides the blazin' heat I had fun. It was a lot of note taking but heyyy ....that's my job as a journalist. Today I interviewed my former doctor. I really got a chance to see my old nurse and see the changes of the clinic. I am really enjoying this. So far this week has been exciting especially with the presentations.

This is Seshat, and well, I think we could be better. I think that we're making progress as a team, so we're working on that. I think Terell's idea for tomorrow is a great one, and it should get us started and getting better. One thing that I think that we as a team should do is promote teamsmanship and sportsmanship among ourselves as well as with other teams. We need to maintain good relations with each other, not just because we're going to have to work with each other after this, but because it would be good if we could be at least on a speaking basis with each other after this. I said this before, so now I'm just venting, so ignore me if you wish. Rude people annoy me, and make me very very angry.

On a lighter note, the sky is blue, the birds are chirping, Diesel is getting considerably more attention and love and care, and all, for now, at 9:17 PM is at peace at HarlemLIVE . . . hahahahaHAHAHAHAHAH yeah right! woo, I needed a laugh. Okay, that was priceless . . . . I crack myself up.

And now, i shall exit, with the dull roar of reggaeton blaring in my ear, and amicable relations are present . . . .where you can almost forget that this is a competition and bask in the contentment and familial feel that are present . . . . the essence of HarlemLIVE.

Yo its yung joc aka Kuamel. First and for most I wanna say Its goin down. HarlemLIVE is starting to get serious as time progresses. I finally got more than one story and I'm gonna turn in four on Monday. I'm glad HL took the intiative to release those who didn't fit in well. It opened some eyes and I can say myself I'm starting to get serious as far as being a leader. HL is starting to become routine in my schedule as its should be with the exception of those who have other priorities. Trying to kick us out because of the wall, is whack. Hl is like the only youth media program where the participants recieve the full extent of what they produce. We create and edit our own stories which is a freedom that is limited to teens becuase of age and inexperience. At least HL allows us to have a perecent error and still be able to publish. That gives us inspiration and makes HL more attractive becuase of the freedom it allows. As far as the competition the point spread WILL change Monday becuase of all the progress we've made. The shuffle is doin there thing and we have to give all the credit in the world. We won't complain anymore. Johnny is not an excuse. We will come through despite him. Like I said, Team Joc is in the building. Its goin down. Easy.

diaries of the the ailing

so yeah....everyone is wondering why i've been running around in circles like a foul in a meathouse, why I seen to be just "doing nothing". In my defense, I would first like to note that everyday since I have started coming to harlem live ironically Ive been having these day long headaches.sometimes the small pounding in my head is very soft but at time when I try to focus on reading, or researching or writing (anything that involves concetration), i get these really disruptive headaches. SO what I have decided to do Is be here during the day with the group, helping around finding out what stories need to be done,but doing my own research on my own time, and gettging the majority of my work done at home...which keeps me up LATER at night when I get home from HL...which why I apparently passed out for a couple hours today at the office. Im just so overwhelmed with things to do, im always busy, if not at Harlme live, with my summer SAT classes, with my other job in Brooklyn, and these headaches havent been making them any better. On wednesday, I went to the doctor who did some tests as to what might be going on but I havent go the results back yet. I just hope im okay and the headaches are the result of stress of somesort, which wouldnt be too surpising seeing that Im not the only one here at HL who feels the pressure and has become a lil stressed as a rsult of it. I just need to take it easy, it's summertime for god sakes!

Today I realized that the competition has just got harder. Even though we got the killa team, every one has to work hard in order to stay in. Today we had a staff meeting and a few people have gotten eliminated. When that occured I really started to think about the competition alot.

Hello! My name is Matthew Sneh and I am on the video team for HarlemLive. I like being on the video team because I get to go out and do stories on my topic. I interview random people on the street to see how they feel about certain issues affecting our community today. Now I'm learning how to edit my videos on Final Cut Pro. I started at HarlemLive in early june. I found out about HarlemLive when three representatives gave a presentation about the program in my school. After that HarlemLive interviewed me and i started doing video. I am now participating in the summer youth challenge. The name of my team is Team Anonymous. i plan to have a good summer and produce a good story for my team.

Make sure each person on the team has posted their blogs and does so each week. Two blogs a day are due from each team Monday thru Saturday.

Bike Thief

I was coming out the gym tonight and there was another guy "unlocking" his bike where about 5 other bikes, including my own, were chained/secured against this bike post. As I stooped over to put my key into my lock, i smelled the strong body odor of someone who hadn't showered in days and perhaps had been sleeping outside. As I stood up, this guy was grumbling about having lost his key while going at the cable lock with some wirecutters. I thought, oh this guy is stealing this bike right in front of me. Then I said, "ok, i'll be a good samaritan."

I spoke up while putting my hand on the bike frame. "Um, this is my friend's bike. They're coming out the gym."

"This is not yoru friend's bike. This is my bike," the smelly man said. "I already told you this is my bike, I lost my key."

I was like, "Naw. This is my friend's bike. They'll be out shortly."

It went back and forth with him saying things like "You need to mind your own business." and "Oh so you want to be a hero." or "You played yourself," after I asked folks coming out the gym if they knew whose bike it was 'cuz this guy was trying to cut the lock." But mostly I just ignored his comments, just hoping the proper owner would arrive.

One west african guy came out and said, "that's probably the same guy that stole by bike!"

Anyway I waited 'til the thief departed, wondering if he'd now be on the lookout for me in the future.

There were others that I see all the time from the gym who started hanging outside. They said they'd look after the bike with the almost cut lock. It seemed safe since the guy gave up and went away grumbling and cursing me all the way. I didn't get to meet the person whose bike I saved. I just hope I don't live to regret it.

Okay, no more posts about Diesel, (I bore myself). I know I'm pretty new to HarlemLIVE, but I have seen a big change in HarlemLIVE. It seems that this summer program is creating animosity between teams, and people in general. I understand that it was supposed to be a competition, but some people (on my team as well) have been VERY competitive. Some have been downright rude. Is this program really as effective as we think it should be? Yesterday, people were afraid to share their ideas with Chris, fearing that someone else would steal their stories. Hey, look, that's messed up. COME ON, PEOPLE!!!! Wake up and smell the lizard poop! During this competition, the LEAST we could do is be polite to each other!

Yeah, What It Do Babyy, It's the Ace, of the suit with the rhombus-like shape. Day went aight. Got back on the A-Train again. Today it was better than yesterday. Even though I had to see if I could go and get a shirt for my brother birthday. All the Cancers represent for my brother!!!!! I hopped back on the train and came up to HL with no problem this time. However, that was still only the beginning of my day. I had to get an interview done with a sportswriter for one of my career profiles. I had to go to 59th street on Lexington Ave. I took the R-Train, (no problems) but I got a little paranoid, mainly cuz I never took that train before. I got to Fifth Ave. and I had to ask someone where 59th and Lexington. Little did I know, that was the next stop on the train. Therefore, I was cool, just like the Gang babyy, just like the Gang.......EXCEPT! IT WAS SO HOT TODAY MAN, I felt like God was hungry and decided to put my in the oven for dinner! I mean daaaamn, where was the oxygen today. I'm walkin up Lexington and 59th lookin like im about to either steal somethin or rob somebody. I was lucky to get into theBloomberg Building safe+sound. Once in though, it felt like pure heaven. There shoulda been Angels in there dressed in white playing harps and singing "ahhhhhhhh." I felt like I really met 50 Cent at the Pearly Gates at that moment. In reality though, there were steel counters, and limestone statues on the wall. And that's just the lobby! Around the corner there were more steel counters, and pillars, and they took a picture of my face with a camera in the wall. I coulda been on an interview to join the MIB if I didn't know any better! Next, I hit the elevators to go and see my interviewee, and the elevators had green and red lights to indicate which elevators were going up and which were going down (Team Joc What It Do Babyy!), that was crazy too. Now to the best part of the building: Floor Six. You come through the elevator and there is someone to greet you when you walk in. He told me where to sit, to wait for my interviewee, but I barely paid attention to what he said cuz I turned around and saw the snack bar that Rich had told me of. To tell you the truth, the snack bar was HUGE understatement for what I saw. Number one: Snack Bars aint free. All those chips, and sodas and juices and food and candy was just there for the taking. I coulda took anything I wanted, but I didn't want to be too greedy so I just got an Iced Tea....Anyway, the interview went great. I got my notes, and I plan on interviewing more writers for my career profile goal. Shuffle Alliance is a about to go in, real big like Manny Fresh. IT'S THE ROC!!!

So far being on Team Joc everthing is not (goin down). It's not really with anyone in the group but people outside of the group. Hey im not going to sit here and sugar coat everthing but im not going to say any names.But some people don't like my team too much. I Think some people are RIDIN ON OUR JOC. Im not mad but its not cool how some people think its funny to make jokes about our team name. Another problem would be GOOF POINTS. The goof points are very hard not to get. Goof points are errors people make. In which people can give you in order to take away points from your team. Hey these problems are just minor things we as a team need to work on. Today, we feature a couple from Team Shuffle Alliance as the "blogs of the day." The first is bare bones, what this program is about: Getting out in the city, making discoveries, practicing your skills, and making moves! Not sure who wrote this one:

Though it was a hot day today to be outside, we went out to do a story on organic fresh farms in the heart of Harlem. I have walked past these farms before and never thought once that it was owned by one person, I always assumed a certain organization did. This particular one was owned by an African American women trying to bring organic vegatables to the community at an offordable price. My camera man and my reporter did a great job on the shot and the interviews. The assingments are not as bad as i thought they were going to be. I can honestly say that the day was very productive and that memebers of my group took equal parts.

I only took that train 2 times, but each time I took it , someone wanted to pop off, or fight, for those that are deficient in Hood Talk. But that train is bugged out man, for real. The first time I got on it to arrive to HL, some people got Into a fight on the car next to the one I was in. Now I could understand that people gotta handle their businees, but on a moving train? My peoples, nobody would be able to get out of the train if someone started shootiin off or whatever.
Next thting you know, the guy sittin next to me starts yellin all on te train about how they shouldn't be fightin eachother on the train cuz you can't move nowhere! I could understand that too, but did he have to YELL IN MY EAR? Btween 59th and 125th was where we stopped, making me even later than I had to be. Lol, I skipped takin that train the next day to save myself from the trouble.....Fastforward to this morning, I decide to try out the A one more again. anyway, everything is going good, and im on schedule to arrive to the site ahead of time. 34 St. was where the drama started. DJ Kay Slay shoulda been there for that one. I'm posted on the door of the train, listenin to my Cherrelle and all that-"I Didn't Mean To Turn You Onnn"- vibin, until I hear loud voices through my Creative earphones. I turn around, and what do I see? A West Indian woman, and a Spanish man fighting over something. don't neccessarily know what they were speakin on but it got a little violent to say the least.
Then, out of nowhere, another guy comes out and tells the spanish guy to stop yellin at the woman like that. I agreed with him on that. But It was like seein Superman comin to save the day. "I will punch you in your face right now, my dude, what's really good? Huh? what's really good?" That was what the Superman-like character said to the Spanis dude. Luckily it died down after that. But I was just in the middle of a huge argument wit really nowhere to breeze to if somebody did pull out a gun or somethin. Them A-Train's kid, 'll tell ya. they don't be the move sometimes........IT'S THE ROC!!!

So far being part of this group has allowed me to form connections with various people. it seems as though everyone is here for the same purpose and that is to accomplish the goal of "power of the young voice"....BASICALLY...everyone wants to be heard. Each member has expressed their thoughts through video and through their blogs and it makes me more involved and interested in this program . It's very obvious that people love it here and that being here has somewhat shaped or changed their lives.
In my case, my group and this program has helped me become even more expressive and "relatable." I love my team members for the simple fact that they help me correct my mistakes instead of laugh at them. i can tell that my team members are all about progression and growth TOGETHER rather than individually. i'm glad that's the case rather than young African-Americans fighting and degrading one another. It's a relief to know that i am able to break out of shyness so quickly. a person may smile and then a full blown conversation begins. It's cool here. I am most certain that my teammates are gonna help me thru this...all of this...as a team....in UNITY. YAY!

I've been at HarlemLive for about two weeks now and I think I basically got it, the weird Apple iMacs and all that . . . . but the most pressing issue that I feel is facing us here at HarlemLive is the care and upkeep of . . . .dun dun dun . . .the lizard!!! seriously people, Diesel is an iguana and he doesn't get enough to eat, and he should be in the sun or in a heated environment for AT LEAST two hours each day. And he shouldn't eat regular iceberg or romaine lettuce! he needs mustard greens and other nutrient filled vegetables!!!! come on people!!!! save our lizard!!!!

I Had a good Day!!
Hey everyone its Ya boy Kareem. As you can see by the title of this blog I had a good day. I arived at HarlemLive at 10:30 this morning after a good weekend. I was Eager and ready to get started on reporting on stories. Today we were broken into groups. I am very happy with my group and i think we have great potential. We also found out that the DYCD is trying to shut us down. When I heard this, I was very disapponted because this has been my best job experience yet.

Melvin Johnson

Melvin Johnson seems to be a brightly lit star which has emerged from the HarlemLive organization. Drawn here by an article he read in the Source magazine, Johnson joined the organization in 1999 and followed his dream from then on. Johnson showed his skills throughout his time at HarlemLive sufficiently as his entrepreneur desires pushed him forward.
Being with Harlemive for seven years, Johnson explains how he enjoyed his experiences. As loyal alumni of HarlemLive, he finds his way back, to and fro, to HarlemLive from time to time in order to give a little of his knowledge in the effort to inspire a few more children. Just as he has been an influential force he was also influenced during his days at HarlemLive.
Upon joining the Harlemlive staff, Johnson was pushed by the other members to uncover his talents. His input to work at HarlemLive has changed his obscure life‚Äôs direction and put him on a path of success. Johnson had numerous successes here at HarlemLive but there‚Äôs is one that stood out blatantly in his mind.
One day, Johnson agreed to tag along with his peers on a public speaking adventure. As he thought he was going to a small student seminar, he quickly realized he was conned. He was surprised to find out that he was really at a teachers college with grown adults staring at him waiting for him to speak. Luckily, he was able to get over his nerves and made the public speaking one of his most providential experiences.
As his skills continued to grow, he went around to other schools in the attempt to draw other kids back to HarlemLive for a somewhat similar experience. Around early 2000, Johnson utilized community websites such as BlackPlanet, Migente and Yahoo in order to promote HarlemLive as well as recruit youth for the HarlemLive experience. Johnson truly believes that HarlemLive is beneficial place for the youth. He says the skill one learns is beneficial along with its preparations with subjects such as: Art, Photography, Digital Design and different forms of Web Format.
Despite what ones future may include, the skills they learn in Harlem Live can always help in the future. Melvin Johnson's famous quote would be, "Point out a career your interested in and i'll show you how the experiences at Hl can benifit u in learning more about this career by either getting hands on experiences or using your press badge to investigate more then the average teen can." As he was at one of his schools talking to kids about HarlemLive and made this exclamation, one of the students asked how HarlemLive would help them with accounting. Johnson replied slyly, "You can work with the quickbooks."
As Melvin Johnson continued his life, his experiences at Harlemlive truly did help as it gave him knowledge prior to his work experiences to come. As he was with HarlemLive, he began working with two of his colleagues as together they created web programs, a technique learned at HarlemLive. With such knowledge, these three were able to find business as companies came to them asking for them to create official websites. Quickly after joining harlemlive johnson was qualified for different Multimedia job positions. Johnson was hired as an intern for a russell simmons startup 360hiphop.com in summer of 2000. Presently he works. He currently works for Abysinnian Development Corportations IT Department as the Network Administrator for Thurgood Marshall Academy in Harlem
Mr. Johnson coninues to be involved with Commnuity based organiations such as, dot.com agencies, communities, construction with youths, web/program development, and organizational buildings all for very favorable prices.
Along with great experiences comes...embarrassing moments. One of Melvin's most embarrassing moments was when he went to do an interview with an artist named Tony Touch. His show had just finished and Melvin was feeling tired and slightly anxious to get the interview over with. As he approached one of the Hispanic crew members, he was surprised to find that the person he thought was Mr. Touch was actually an associate by the name of Crazy Legs. Melvin says he was embarrassed because he was surrounded by a large crowd. Additionally, Crazy legs gave Melvin a look as though to tell him how foolish he was. But overall, HarlemLive is a second home for Johnson as well as many other people. It is a great honor to be here and to share times with everyone else.

Today was my first day as a Harlem Live Staff Member. I'm looking forward to the actual start of the program because I'm really interested in the things that they have to offer. I did majority of the things on my Newbie List . I just wish I would have found this program earlier , it was sort of an accident the way I got into this program. I look forward to Wedensday, so until then I'm out .

I came to the office before 3 o clock for the first time, I was here around 11 something in the morning!

I came in to talk to some of the people that will be coming to harlem live for the summer through summer youth. It went well, I think that they will do well in the program. Kamal came in and completely took over saying the same things I already said, but hey at least the people will definitely know what they are getting into.

I have also recently written a story on Charlayne Hunter Gault's new book and her visit to the Hue-man bookstore in Harlem, so that story should be up on the site soon (TYRELL!!!)

Hopefully this summer will be really productive. Oh and everyone catch me in the August issue of Seventeen magazine which is in stores right now!

While I attended the FSWW at Columbia University, I ran into a lot of interesting people that either studied at Columbia University a while ago,attended the Ceremony to give respect to friends that were going to be honored or were the individuals who were one of the honorees. One interesting person I met was Lou Myers. Known for his role in the "Different World" as Vernon Gaines and many other movies and TV shows,he attended the Ceremony as a part of "The Color Purple" and wanted to give respect to his friend LaChanze,the star of the play who playes "Cellie", who was honored for her role in "The Color Purple". He went further into the broadway show.He plays the role of Ol' Mister who owned a piece a land in 1806 that he trying his hardest to hold on to because of people such as the KKK are trying to take it away.I asked him questions about not the only the show,but the book and the movie. He described them all as having different impacts and "Respects Oprah" for putting the show together.He was also interested in HarlemLIVE and the work put into helping teens of New York. He made sure to tell me that one day he'll visit and do whatever he can do to help us out.

Katerina or "Kat" joined HarlemLIVE when she was just a sophomore at Beacon High School. She started out as a reporter at HL and in a few years became Associate Editor-in-Chief. While at HL, she took video classes. Her video skills were tested as she volunteered to help me set up the equipment for her interview. Though it has been a long time since Kat has had a video class at HL, she passed my test. Poetry Slams, Pizza Night and Man on the Street were some of her most memorable moments from HL, but "everyday was pretty eventful" to Kat. A student at Columbia University, she has worked for the New York Times after being selected as a New York Times Scholar. I asked her for some advice for me and my fellow newbies, "Make the most of your time here", she said. I think that was one of the best pieces of advice I had since joining HL.

Alummi of the Day: Elliot Price

At age 15, Elliot Price was introduced to HarlemLIVE through "Playing To Win", a after school program he attended for the use of the computers where he met Rich. He was curious, so he joined. Though he attends Georgia State and majors Business, HarlemLIVE still had a great impact on him. He described Journalism as "Being able to express yourself" and subjects such as computers, PR, web design and photography helped him throughout things like school.
One major memory he has, is when he was apart of a competition in where to win, you had to distribute flyers and the person who issues the most wins. The two other contestants gave out a minimum of twenty flyers in less then twenty minutes. Elliot on the other hand was only able to give out three flyers in a half hour. Though Rich pushed that day in Elliot's face for almost two years, the ability to be on a Nickelodeon show was something that Rich couldn't tease Elliot about.

HL's Summer Youth Media Challenge

We're off to a good start, ahead of where we were last year. And now, we have Kamal to work basically full time to run the office and learn all the systems and procedures. We've been do'n well with the alums of the day and many have been posted on this blog.

We have a lot coming up this week: stories, meetings, classes, presentations. Keep checking the calendar for daily changes.

We just spoke to the folks at ABC TV. We're going to go check the space for the award ceremony in August. We receive our award from Union Square next week, which will allow for us to pay rent, pay kamal, buy new equipment and have money for bills for the next few months. Phew!!!

HarlemLIVE - Monday June 12th

School is finally almost finished! So I will be at Harlem Live a lot more now. It's too bad I won't be getting paid though because I missed the Summer Youh deadline. They ask for way too many papers...

I taught a journalism class last week. It was interesting. Most of the things in journalism that I do, it's like second nature or something. But in order to teach other people you have to remember that they don't know ANYTHING AT ALL. You have to tell them even the litte things that you may not even think about or take for granted. But it felt good to spread information about the field of journalism and inspire other young people to become involved in that field.
This summer I'll be attending a workshop at NYU, and will do a story to document that experience in addition to writing the story for the NYU paper and whatever else they will be having me do. I will also be living on the NYU expense free for ten days. Well, I am about to go rehearse for this HL fashion show, going down JUNE 30th!! HOV is in the building!

Also....make sure you get that August 2006 issue of SEVENTEEN magazine.........I'm in it.

My First Day

So far, HarlemLIVE is everything I'd expect it to be. It's a fun enviornment and I'm learning new and interesting things. The alumni's are nothing but nice and helpful and they all made me feel welcomed amd I am aware at the fact that they want to help me. I've already took Public Speaking, Journalism, Video and Photography and I'm going to soon take classes in Tech and Web Design. I can't wait for the summer so I can test the skills i've been learning. One experience I had so far was video taping a pedestrian while he was asked questions about the cost of new brownstones located here in Harlem. It was a great experience because I was able to use a video camera. Also my Public Speaking skills was tested when I and other HarlemLIVE peers had to pretend we were at a Networking Party. I know that HarlemLIVE has a lot to offer me and I have a lot to offer them.

Alumni of the day: Kelvin Christie

Today I interviewed an inspiring alumni named Kelvin Christie here at HL. While interviewing I realized he had a common past with some of the people that I know. I learned about his past of being in a gang as a teenager and his transition into HL and how it helped turn him around.

I wondered why he wanted to join a gang and he simply responded with, "When I was younger I was a thrill seeker." Along with that comment I asked what drew him to HL and why did he want to join. He said, "I was a poet and it was the only thing I had going for me at the time." I felt a personal connection to that comment so I asked how did he find out about HL. "I was in a shelter and my friend Seul was part of HL and he brought me here." While talking about his past I wanted to focus on his present and his future. Kelvin turned his life around and finished recieving his degree in Liberal Arts and Science.

Kelvin is now applying to go to medical school, majoring in medicine and psychology. Overall he had a very inspiring story and without knowing him too well I can honestly say im proud of him.

My First Days HarlemLIVE

My first days at HL has been great. I met alot of new and fun people. I also learned a little more about becoming a journalist. Im having alot of fun so far in reaching my goals of being a journalist and what im tryin to achieve at HL. Alot of the people I met are cool and fun to be around. It is hard work here but it also prepares you for the real world when you have a a job or something that needs to be done. HL has been a fun place to be at and it has given me something to do afterschool and through the summer, so i won't be laying around my house doing nothing. HL has so far been a fun experience and a fun program to be in!

My questions:..
What is the most memorable moment you experience in HarlemLive?
At the end of all our classes at MNN (Manhattan Neighborhood Network), when we accomplished a video to promote HL to the world, seeing the smiles in my fellow co-workers accomplish something was remarkable and made me happy.

Your reason for joining HarlemLive was‚Ä¶?
I joined HL because of friends and I had a curiosity to find out about HarlemLive and what my friends were doing and why not me?

Did HarlemLive help you achieve your goals?

No, not to achieve my goals but to help me get BETTER goals. To be a better computer educator. I started to teach here which will develop my dream of following a teaching career.

What has HarlemLive taught you to do?
I learned everything from Web design to Video producing. Most of my skills used today got better because of HL. Having enhanced skills on networking, public speaking, and video made me feel that my dreams can be achieved.

What are you doing now?
I attend New York City College of Technology to better myself and to obtain a communications degree.

I hate Mondays but this one wasn't too bad

Like I said I hate Mondays but today wasn;t that bad. I made it to school on time today and went to all my classes and did all my homework. I got out a little early and made it up to HL and got some stuff done. I posted important dates for the Fashion Show on the calendar and wrote a story for HL (I can't even remember the last story I wrote for HL but I'm sure Kevin can). I taught a class with Rhonesha (Journalism Part 2). It was good, the kids were kind of quiet (maybe I was talking too much; well no because I asked if anyone had questions). I hope that they took it all in, but the best thing about journalism is that most of it you just learn by experience. I am really excited about all the newbies coming in. They are all young and seem really eager to learn and work which is great! I am sad I won't be around in July to see them in the competition. But I think this summer is going to be great. While up in Ithaca I hope to help out as much as I can and I will be there for the awards ceremony. Summer '06!!!

One of the first alumni to join HL, Malik Wilson was referred to HL by Osakwe Beale. "I've been apart of HL for 3 years, since 1997". Since then, he had many experiences from HL. "One of the most memeroable that I have is the trip to Washington D.C. and also performing for the awards". When asked what was his most embarassing experience, Malik replied jokingly "When Rich ripped up my bag".

Through HL, Malik has been to many places. " I even got to spend the whole school year in Africa.". In his closng remarks, I asked why did he join Harlemlive and what did it teach him. "I joined Harlemlive because I felt it was a good program to join and in the end, HarlemLIVE taught me that nothing is impossible".
